WHAT DOES THE WORD WORSHIP MEAN?
I looked this up today.
In Mounce Interlinear New Testament it says this;
Worship is taken from the Greek word Proskyneo which means;
1/ To do reverence or homage* by kissing the hand.
2/ To do reverence or homage by prostration.**
3/ To pay divine homage, worship, adore.
4/ To bow oneself in adoration.
So, I asked myself, “Do I worship with the correct attitude? Do I prostrate myself on the ground? (Well, I have done it once or twice in church when no-one else was there, then felt unsure that I was doing the right thing so stopped doing it). Do I bow myself low? Not very often now. I used to kneel to pray, but I haven’t lately. Or, as I suspect happens more than I would care to admit, do I worship standing up, with my head up and pride intact?
Would I kiss his hand in reverence?*** Somehow this thought, like the thought of the woman washing his feet, makes me feel uncomfortable. I wonder if it just feels a bit like stepping into someone’s personal space? Or maybe, it’s too physically close for me? Not sure. Anyway, I think this deserves a bit of thought.
I think I will pray about it and see where the Holy Spirit leads me.
(My husband, a non-believer, has just handed me a piece of paper that I had dropped, with this on it.
‘In every situation, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace God, which passes all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.’ Phillipians 4:6-7 – that’s interesting, isn’t it?)
I love my God.
Read the bible for yourself,
See what you think.
