I heard a great talk on You tube (walking in the Holy Spirit by Dr. Charles Stanley), which made me think about how I walk in the Spirit of God.
Dr. Stanley reminded me that 'the Holy Spirit in us is the only way we can interpret the will and the word of God.' It is the Holy Spirit who teaches us and guides us in the right direction, not only for our daily life, but also in our reading and understanding of God.
There have been many times when I've asked God a question or said, "I don't understand that" or "well what does that mean?" as I've read the bible. Then weeks, months or even years later, the answer springs up at me out of the blue. (I'm sure the length of time is more to do with me than the Holy Spirit - he must be very patient!)
Dr. Stanley said that we need to follow the directions of the Spirit - we must be dependent on him every day, and that the power of the Holy spirit gives us the understanding, the authority, the power, the strength, the love and the trust of God to do what ever is being asked of us.
I believe the Holy Spirit is essential to walk with God. (John 16:13, Galatians 5:16-26)
Our first battle is in our minds where we are tempted by our desires to do wrong things. For this reason we make a conscious decision to turn to God and ignore those temptations, and we can be sure the Spirit of God is with us and strengthens us to do right. We then need to pray for those who are trying to temp us/lead us astray because the chances are they don't know what they are asking us to do. This can be very difficult when its our family and friends who are tempting us to turn from God's way. There are times when I have allowed the fear of upsetting someone, or the fear of being embarrassed to stop me from doing what I felt I should be doing - and I always regret it!
Ask for God's help in prayer and trust him to support you.
This is how I understand my God.
