I’ve been reading 2 Peter over the last couple of days and what jumped out at me is that although he allows us to go through trials, he knows how to rescue us from them.
In 2 Peter chapter 2, Peter is talking about the false prophets and teachers that went out among the world to deceive and lead people astray, and how God has dealt with them in the past. Peter talks about how God sent the angels who had sinned into hell, about the flood in Noah’s time and the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, where almost everyone rejected their heavenly Father and behaved in such depraved selfish ways that the Lord had no choice but to destroy them. Yet he reminds us that Noah and Lot found favour in his sight because they kept their faith and refused to join in the evil of those times. Even though they were living in terrible times and saw horrible things happening all around them, sometimes even happening to them, God gave them an escape route. He rescued them from the destruction that came on everyone else.
Psalm 58:18 says,
‘He rescues me unharmed from the battle waged against me, even though many oppose me.’
Proverbs 12:6 says,
The words of the wicked lie in wait for blood, but the speech of the upright rescues them.’
When we are weak, he rescues us from our powerful enemies from those who are too strong for us. Psalm 18:17&48
He recues us because he delights in those who believe in him, acknowledge him and turn to him for help. Psalm 18:19, 34:22 & 91:14
To the Jews he said,
‘Listen to me, you descendants of Jacob and the remnant of the people of Israel. You whom I have upheld since your birth, and have carried since you were born. Even into your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain and rescue you.’ Isaiah 46:3-5
This must have been some comfort to those in the holocaust, because it must have seemed that the Jews as a people would not survive, but God promised that there would always be a remnant which would be rescued and survive.
He came himself in the body of Jesus Christ to rescue us all from our sins, from this evil age, from the dominion of darkness and from the coming wrath of God. Galatians 1:4, Colossians 1:13 and 1 Thessalonians 1:10
There is a promise to those whom he rescues of a glorious future with him. Isaiah 35:10
And there is a warning of no rescue for those who forget (or ignore) God. Psalm 50:22
The fact that we need rescuing means that we may be surrounded by evil or go through troubles and difficult times. But if we hold onto our God through Jesus Christ his son, we will not only be rescued, but we will be glorified with Christ at the end.
That is the best hope there is.
So hold onto Jesus, and he will take you home.
This is how I understand my God.
