JESUS GIVES THE DISCIPLES, AND US,  US HOPE

A PLACE FOR US

Following on from the blog, ‘NO JESUS, NO FUTURE,’ Jesus leaves the disciples and all who follow the hope of a future with Him.

Jesus told the disciples that he was going away and that they could not yet go with him, though they would follow him later.  (John 13:36). Verses 37-38 is where Peter tells Jesus he will lay down his life for him, but Jesus tells Peter that before the cock crows, he will have denied Jesus 3 times.

Peter was obviously distressed at this thought, so Jesus said to them all, “Let not your hearts be troubled, believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house there are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And when I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you to be with myself, that where I am, you may be also. And you know the way where I am going. (John 14:14).

Thomas seems to have panicked a bit – as I am sure I would also would have done in that situation, and he says, “Lord, we do not know where you are going, how can we know the way?”

This is where Jesus tells them, “I am the way, the truth and the life. (verse 6).

In verses 12-14, Jesus tells them that they will do greater works than him because he is going to the Father. He also says that anything they ask in his name, he will do, ‘that the Father may be glorified in the Son.’ And he promises to pray that the Father send them another Counseller, the Holy Spirit, whom the world cannot receive, but they can because they believe. And, I believe this applies to all those who follow after them.

So, this is the hope that Jesus gives us.

1/ He is with the Father and is preparing a place for us.

2/ He has sent us the Holy Spirit to counsel and comfort us.

3/ He is coming back to fetch us.

Jesus is mankind’s future. This is our hope

This is how I understand my God.
