I have heard criticism of the bible based on the fact that the four gospels and letters seem to contradict themselves. However, I have never noticed this.
What I read is Jesus from different perspectives. The disciples all had different characteristics and were bought up in different circumstances. Like most of us today, some were well off, some were poor, some were scribes (writers), some were physical workers. All different, and when you get a good mix of people and ask them what they know about one person, they will all have some similarities, and some completely different observations, depending on what interests them and what they understand.
The concordance in the back of my bible confirms this and describes the following.
Matthew was a tax collector, (Matthew 10:3). Matthew was interested in Jesus the king, and the promised Messiah who fulfils the scriptures prophesied in the old testament, and was written primarily to the Jews.
Mark recognised Jesus as the tireless servant, and was writing to gentiles as suggested by his explanation of Jewish words and customs and has details not found in Matthew or Luke.
Luke was a physician, (Colossians 4:14). Luke observed Jesus miraculous healings more so than the others because that was his interest in life.
John was more interested in the spiritual side of Jesus and writes more about what Christ said about himself. He writes more about what Jesus said to the people he met, and he talks in more depth about faith and eternal life.
Four different points of view of the same person.
simples!!!
This is how I understand my God. Read for yourself, see what you think.
